Mathematics at Ashbrook Junior School
At Ashbrook Junior School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to develop confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve and apply their mathematical understanding in a range of contexts.
Our curriculum is aligned with White Rose Maths but carefully adapted to meet the needs of our children, ensuring learning is appropriately sequenced, challenging and accessible to all.
Our approach places a strong emphasis on guided and independent practice, allowing children to develop confidence and secure their mathematical understanding. Through carefully structured teaching, modelling and purposeful questioning, children are supported before progressing towards greater independence. We use variation in mathematical concepts and representations to deepen understanding, expose misconceptions and challenge children to think critically, make connections and apply their learning in unfamiliar contexts.
Technology plays an important role in supporting mathematical development. We use Magma Maths to develop reasoning, problem-solving and mathematical fluency, while Showbie quizzes provide regular opportunities for retrieval practice, assessment and targeted feedback. These digital tools help teachers identify misconceptions, adapt teaching and support every child in making progress.
Through engaging lessons, purposeful practice and high-quality mathematical discussions, we aim to nurture a positive attitude towards mathematics and equip children with the knowledge and skills they need for future success.
